The Shawshank Redemption
In film The Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Darabont released 1994. This is story was also written as novel by Stephen King written 1982. In this film I am going to cover 3 main Points: Hope, redemption and freedom. I found this really interesting in the way that Andy filps charecters. The people who are in prison are bad and the Wardden and the grauds are good. But this film flips that around, Andy is good whereas the Wardden and the grauds are bad.
In the film the one person who has hope throughout the film is Andy. One scene that Andy shows hope in is: the men they sit in the sun drinking cold bottles of beer. Andy sits by himself (in the light)to show that he is different. He retains hope and wants to retain a sense of freedom. Another way Andy shows hope is he stars digging a tunnel over 20 years with a rock hammer. The perseverance and determination that Andy showed was interesting. What interests me about the tunnel that Andy dug was that he never gave up. I think I would have given up if I was in the same situation as Andy. This scene is all about giving the prisoners a taste of hope and freedom. “We sat and drunk with the sun on our shoulders and felt like free men..We were the Lords of all Creation.” At one point Red said. “Hope is a dangerous thing it can kill a man.” This quote shows the diffrents between Red and Andy. They have very diffrent views on hope. The message is that hope is wonderful thing but too much can sent you over the edge. Andy has hope unlike the other prisoners who have lost all. Brooks, Red and Andy are great examples of charecters to show hope. Brooks lose all hope even when let outside of prison; he ends killing himself because he has adamted to the enviroment. “He’s just institutionalised.” Red is in the middle between no hope and optimistic. Red is about go down the same parth as Brooks. But Andy gives gives Red hope to stop him from making the same moves as Brooks. Andy on the other hand is optimistic. He is full of hope. Hope is something we should all have, but too much can be fateul. I think we should all have hope but don’t relie on it too much. If you hope for something that is unrealist it could lead you down hill. So you should realist with your hope. There is always light on andy to show that he is full of hope. One example of this is the rooftop scene. Andy is sitting alone with the light behind him.
Prison is a horrible place to be. Captain Hadley murders two men, Chubby Fat Ass on the first night and Tommy Williams later in the film. It’s unhuman to keep these human lock up in condition they keepin. “Andy is incarceated for well on 20 years in most inhuman conditions amid a confraternity of negative thinkers, who have long given up any expectaion of being free. Yet he beavers away at chipping through his cell’s concrete wall and lays a plan for robbiiong Norton of his ill-gotten gains.” Andy was put in prison beign wrongle convicted. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. In this case Andy hasn’t been givin justice. The evdince that Andy commited were: “His footprints outside on the drive of his wife, his fingerprints on the broken whisky bottle, the car tyre marks in the mud outside the murder scene, failure of the police to find Andy’s gun in the Royal River and Andy’s confession that he would rather see his wife in Hell than see her in a divorce court in Reno, which implies that he wanted her dead.” We have tighter rules these days so I think they would have investagated futher instend of just throwing Andy in prison. The clues will be investgated futher. The why we do death Penalty’s today is much more effective than what we did back in the old times. Back in the day we used electri chairs, fire squd or tons of other deadly ways. We use injectons today. I think using an injection is the best way to deal out death Penalty’s.
Redemption is theme in this film shown by Andy when he escapes. “He crawled through shit smelling foulness and came out clean on the other side.” Andy crawled through a swear and found freedom. That what Red mean when he said ” came out clean on the other side.” Andy’s redemption is that he escapes. When he in creek he stands with his hands out like Christ. All the dirt and mud washing off him in the rain to show he has been reborn. The drit and mud shows that prison is terrible place to be;He has escaped and he is free. While in jail Andy tells Red to find one stone in the stone that is diffrent. This help stops Red from killing himself because institutionalised which helped him break free. Red’s redemption is that he is let free he finds that stone which contains a lunch box with a stack of cash. The Warrden redemption is that he kills himself because when the cops come to take him away they say: “Make it easy on yourself.” And Warrden ends up shotting himself because he didn’t want to live with the shame. Hadley redemption is that he taken away in handcuffes to show he in trouble. It was interesting to see how Warrden and Hadley started in good postion on the other hand Red and Andy are bad postion. But throught out the film Andy, Red get good redemtion and Warrden, Hadley get bad redemtion. I felt as though everyone in the film got what they got desvered. I feel as though the Warrden and Hadley showed me that redemtion comes in a negative form. Before I watched this film I thought redemtion was all postive but I see the negative impacts it has on redemption and how it can have so many diffrent themes. The message is that if you never give up, your redemption will come. But you have to keep it realistic. The theme because the we want the good guys win and come out on top. Bad people we expect to lose and be beatin by the good. This film followed that theme but in a diffrent way. In this case the Warrden and Hadley is bad, Andy and Red is good.
I think this film would be great for year 12 students to watch this film so they can learn about hope. This film will teach them that no matter how terrible place you, if have hope you will be rewarded. The sences that show hope, freedom and redemption are: The Rooftop- Freedom, The Warden Visits Andy, Aria over the Loudspeaker-Freedom and many more. I chose these scences because I feel as though they support the themes the best. As you can see in my essay I added Freedom to ‘The Rooftop-Freedom’ -‘Aria over the Loundspeaker-Freedom’. The rooftop has Andy sitting alone in the light. Andy is shown to be diffrent and never gives up on hope. He belives that he will find freedom. When Andy put Aria over the lound speaker everyone stops what their doing and look up. The prisoner hadn’t heard music since they were in Jail. The music gives them a scence of freedom. Hope, Freedom and Redemption are three main points in this film. I have explained these points.
