THE HUNGER GAMES

The Hunger Games

By Suzanne Collins

Novel

March

This book is set in the future where the 12 districts are forced to kill each other. This is a terrible way to show the districts that Capitol own them.

the Hunger Games is a story about a world where 12 Districts must choose one boy and girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to fight in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is where 24 tributes(the boy and girl from each district) are put in an area to fight to the death. The games were created a long time ago and the 13 districts rose up against the Capitol. One district was obliterated. ‘He tells of the history of Panem, the country that rose up out of the ashes of a place that was once called North America. He lists the disasters the droughts, the storms, the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war for what little sustenance remained. the result was Panem, a shining Capitol ringed by thirteen districts, which brought peace and prosperity to its citizens. Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. Twelve were defeated, the thirteenth obliterated. The Treaty of Treason  gave us the new laws to guarantee peace and, as our yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated, it gave us the Hunger Games.’

Under the rules each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and boy, called tributes to participate, in an outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland, are the twenty-four tributes. The competitors must fight to the death over several weeks. The last tributes standing wins. ‘The last tributes standing wins.’ The story narrated by Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12. When her sister is chosen to fight in The Hunger Games, she volunteers to takes her place. ‘”Prim!” The strangled cry comes out of my throat, and my muscles begin to move again. “Prim!” I don’t need to shove through the crowd. The other kids make way immediately allowing me a straight path to the stage. I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. “I volunteer!” I gasp “I volunteer as tribute!”‘ Katniss is so kind to her sister because she is very small and wants to put herself forward instead of her sister. This shows Katniss cares so much for her, she doesn’t want anything to hurt her. The night before the Game Peeta says some words that have a big meaning. The meaning of the words is that the tributes aren’t just bits they a people who think also people they care about. ‘time comes, I’m sure I’ll kill just like everybody else. I can’t go down without a fight. Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to…to show the Capitol they don’t own me. That I’m more than just piece in their Games,” says Peeta.’ These words that I will take away from the book because it shows how to mean the Capital is to the tributes from the 12 Districts. This happens in the real world, people are forced to do things they don’t want to do. For example the reason Preisint Snow stays in power for so long is fear. He speards fear over the districts, he makes them belivie that if the district that if they don’t provide two tributes They will be oblilterated. In the real world we have people that rule with fear. One of the people back in world war two was Adolf Hittlar. He rule with fear by killing off any German that any relationship with Jews. He push his belife on to people, who were forced to belive. Another who rules in power is Putin.

Two characters I found interesting were: Effie Trinket, who District 12’s escort, fresh from the Capitol with her scary white grin, pinkish hair, and spring green suit. Haymitch Abernathy, a paunchy, middle-aged man, who is the only District 12 victor. Eiffe is tiresome and clueless. Effie brings a sense of funniness and life to the story. She is also very bossy and is always find a way to win fights. She is very energetic.  I like Effie because bright and bubbly, with that she bring joy to the story. The whole story we would feel sorry for the tribbutes. If Effie wasn’t in this story I wouldn’t pick up the book.  Haymitch talks in a slurred voice. Haymitch does get drunk a lot. Haymitch is destructive. Haymitch is so funny because he is always drunk. The reason for a character like Haymitch is to give a different feeling during the book. In the book, you feel anger for Capitol because of how drunk on power that they make the tributes do whatever they want them to do. But with Haymitch, it makes think about how funny it is when someone drunk. With him, you can have a completely different emotion than the normal. The reason Haymitch drunk is to get himself out of trumatic exprinces. In real world people use drinking as I way to get away from these exprinces. He does redem himself in the end though. When Katniss and Peeta win  Haymitch mood  has changes, I think because he doesn’t need to through the trumatic exprince anymore. Inseted of him Katniss and Peeta need to go through it.

The message I took away from the story is that some people live in some very poor country such as District 12 in this story. In these countries, the family doesn’t have much money to feed everyone in their family. They have a hard time getting food on the table because there is something wrong with how this family is making money. Another message was that some people who are rich use their power to make people do what they want. I feel as though these are the two biggest morals that stuck out for me. I feel if this story studies all forms. The messages in this story really stuck out for me, it would really hard not to miss it.

The challenge that the character face say alive in the games. This source of entertainment was a challenge for the tributes because if they lose they die. If I was a victor I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had killed a person. I couldn’t shake off the feeling of murdering someone I haven’t even known. The feeling of being forced to kill people who are put in this area is the most stupid way to run The Hunger Games. If I was in charge of The Hunger Games I would make sure that it would have killing involved in it.

I would recommend this book anyone who likes reading a futuristic story with some action/thriller this book is perfect for you. This book is an easy read because there aren’t too many complex words. I think if you are really like non-stop action this is the book for you.

This story has taken me on an amazing adventure through this futuristic world and see why the thing was so bad. This book was chosen to show the cruel Capitol showing they own the districts.
